Many people think that doing keyword research is a really complex process, and mainly don’t bother with it because it may be too complex. That is because they do not know what they are looking for, and how are they going to achieve their goal of getting traffic on to their site. Having a effective way to do a proper search is important if you want to get traffic on your site.
Let me share with you three basic principles that I use, which you could apply and follow when you are doing your keyword research.
#1: Word/phrase must make sense
If you would do a search online, would you type in ‘ways to make money’ or ‘ways make money’? I would definitely type in something that sounds more natural and not a weird phrase with keywords clumped together.
Take a look at the picture on the right and try to identify which phrase make sense. You should identify the four below:
- Free money
- Online jobs
- Money making ideas
- Make extra money
Your targeted keywords must sound natural and make sense to the users. You are writing for the user, and not for the search engine. It creates awkwardness if you use random phrases that is not coherent and doesn’t make sense.
It is important for keyword to make sense to people!
#2: There must be some traffic
Every keyword that you are trying to rank should have some traffic. No use trying to target a keyword that no one searches, and also no point if the keyword has too much competition that you are unable to rank at all.
You should be looking at about 40-50 traffic minimum per search term. It sounds like very little traffic, but it could be a sure kill by ranking on the first page of Google easily with it.
Looking at all the keywords in the picture above, there are quite a lot of terms you could target by searching ‘Keyword Research‘. Some keywords I could look at would be:
- Free Keyword Research tool
- Keyword research Software
- Niche Keyword Research
- Google keyword research tool
- Google keyword research
And even more! Low traffic does not mean no traffic. People are searching for these terms, and if you can rank with these words, you are still getting traffic to your site! Over time, all these little rankings will slowly add up and you will see consistent traffic to your website.
It is important to have at least 40-50 traffic!
#3: Low competition
After targeting keyword that you know have some traffic, you must make sure that it does not have a high competition. If there are a lot of people targeting a certain keyword already, chances are that you would not be able to rank for the keyword at all.
My personal preference is to avoid high competition keywords, and focus on the low competition ones. What do I mean by that?
Here’s an example of searching the keyword ‘Make money online‘. There are a few things I look out for: Estimated Traffic, QSR, and KQI.
- QSR (Quoted Search Result) is how many pages with the exact search term. A number below 300 usually gives you a very good chance to rank on the first page on Google for that search term easily.
- KQI (Keyword Quality Indicator) refers to how ‘good’ the keyword is to rank. Green means very good, while red means very poor. Yellow is in between.
- SEO Power refers to the overall result after taking in account to the traffic, QSR and KQI. The higher the number, the better the keyword.
These are all the data you would need to know in order to rank a keyword. You are basically finding the ‘hidden’ and ‘unknown’ keywords where there is little competition, which you could utilize to bring you more traffic.
It is important to have low competition, below 300 QSR!
